The Game of Blackjack

The Game of Blackjack
It was in 1440, in Germany, when gambling with cards was first introduced. Most of the games created had the objective of drawing game cards to have a certain value to win the game. Even though the relationship of the old games to current games remain unknown, it is obvious that blackjack emerged from some of these historical games. Baccarat, with the magic number of 9, appeared in Italy about 1490, followed by the game of seven and a half, which seems to be the first game where the player automatically lost if they went over the desired number. The game of one and thirty was first played sometime before 1570 in Spain, and the Duke of Wellington, the Marquis of Queensbury, and Prime Minister of Disraeli, all played quinze (15) in Crockford’s, the famous English casino, which flourished between 1827 and 1844. From France came trente et quarante (30 and 40), and finally vingt un, or vingt et un (21 or 20 and 1), which crossed the Atlantic ocean, and was listed in the American Hoyle of 1875. As first played in the United States, it was a private game, but by 1910, tables for twenty-one were being offered in the gambling parlors of Evansville, Indiana. Acceptance was slow, and to stimulate interest in 1912, operators offered to pay 3 to 2 for any count of 21 in the first two cards, and 10 to 1 if the 21 consisted of the ace of spades and either the jack of spades or the jack of clubs. This hand was called, of course, blackjack. The 10-to-1 payoff was soon eliminated, but the term remained, first as the name of any two-card 21 hand, and subsequently as the name of the game itself, although twenty-one would have been more appropriate. By 1919, tables covered with green material and emblazoned in gold letter announcing “Blackjack Pays Odds of 3 to 2” were being manufactured in Chicago and appeared in gambling halls throughout the country. The popularity of the game grew slowly until gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, and blackjack soon became the third-most-successful game, outstripping faro, but trailing both roulette and craps. Because of the prohibitive casino edge of 5.26% in roulette, discouraged players drifted away from the game, and by 1948 blackjack had become the second-biggest casino moneymaker. This continued until 1956, when a book was published by Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel, and McDermott, containing a nearly perfect basic strategy, followed in 1962 by Edward O. Thorp’s book, which refined the strategy and added a counting system. Now, for the first time, the sophisticated gambler could learn to play nearly even with the house, and perhaps with a slight edge in their favor. This scientifically developed information sparked a nationwide interest in blackjack that has made it the number one game in American casinos today. Because the table is less than half the size of those required for craps, roulette, or baccarat, with a corresponding reduction in both number of players and casino personnel, blackjack is far less intimidating to the beginning player. Couple this with the simplicity of the basic rules, both the player and the dealer draw cards, and whoever comes closest to 21, without going over, wins.

How can I keep from looking like a big dummy at the blackjack table?
In a few months, I’m heading to Las Vegas for a conference. I am absolutely not a gambler, but figure I’ll spend an hour or two checking out some of the gaudiest casinos and maybe playing some slots. But, for some reason, I also have an urge to try playing blackjack. My question is twofold: 1. What can I expect from the blackjack-playing experience? I’ve only played slots before and have never interacted with anyone at a casino. How can I keep from looking like an idiot? 2. Any recommended resources for basic blackjack strategy?posted by laze to grab bag (28 answers total) 14 users marked this as a favorite

Bla Black Jack

Bla Black Jack
Blackjack is a well known card game since recorded gambling. Playing blackjack is easy – just get a twenty – one (21) by summing up card values. How? Once the dealer deals a player a pair of cards, try to add the values. If your sum equals to twenty one “thanks friend”. “Blackjack!” as most winners are hoping to exclaim with enthusiasm. Nonetheless, if not lets hope, the sum of your cards is near but not beyond 21 and higher than what the dealer deals themselves. Blackjack Counting 101: Number cards are only equal to their face value 2 – 10. The ace has a dual value and can be either 1 or 11. Then, royalty or face cards all equal to ten. Example 1, in this example lets say that the two initial cards are the Jack of Clubs and Ace of Diamonds, if we sum up the values of these card it will be eleven correct? 1 + 10 = 11. But, as we said earlier an ace could be an eleven so ten plus one equals twenty-one. Your ace now is referred as a soft card simply because of its value (eleven). Thus I think someone won that round and in this example it is actually a black jack. How about if the player is dealt 2 aces for example number 2, logically their value will be twenty-two or a two or even twelve. In order to be in the game, one should ask for another card, let’s say that the next card that comes up is a nine. 21 = 11 + 1 + 9. How come? Remember an ace can be counted as either a one or an eleven. This time the ace, which has a value of 1 is referred to as hard card. Statistics and probability enthusiast create their own winning formula(s). Honestly, there are blackjack players who make blackjack a profession. This also is a caution of most casinos. So, to help counter the professional gamblers that play blackjack casinos ended up using multiple decks to help prevent card counting. It was done to help prevent losses and the multiple decks are typically 2 -10 (decks) which they call a shoe. Casinos make profit not just by playing blackjack. Moreover, there are also side bets as they call it. Here are some to name a few. Triple 7’s: A seven, you get paid equal to your bet. Two 7’s get paid thrice your bet and finally (and fortunately) Three 7’s get paid seven times. And you win – with 21! Six-to-Eight = if you get a six, a seven, and an eight your bet is paid doubled. And it is again a 21! A-Nine-A = if you 2 aces and a nine this time your bet is paid 6 times. And again 21! It is still your judgment call …, when you’re in a streak would you still sit-and-play or stand-and-go? ATTENTION! Different casinos have their own set of rules. Observe before you sit and play. Enjoy bla bla blackjacking!

A Blackjack technique is very important in improving your chances of edging out online casinos in their own game. These techniques are important if you want to do well in the game. If you get a nine, you will not bust with twenty-five, the ace card becomes a one card and your overall total becomes fifteen. One of the most important techniques is that what you should do with a soft hand. How will you play a soft card hand is an important factor in scaling down the house edge. Some of the important rules in the game are always get a card when you are currently holding a soft seventeen or a card hand that has a lesser total. You should also not draw when you have a soft eighteen unless the casino dealer has an eight, nine or ten. The most confusing thing about the game is using soft hands is remembering when you have to double. You should double when you have a soft thirteen, fourteen, fifteen or sixteen when the dealer has a four, five or six. If you have a soft seventeen or eighteen, you should double when you are face with a three, four, five or six. When you are currently playing a single deck of card game you should double if you have soft seventeen against a two. If you can carefully follow these doubling techniques, you will improve your chances of earning a lot of money in the game. Because of this edge, a lot of casinos do not allow doubling. But some casinos allow doubling. Some blackjack varieties that allow doubling if you have a soft total are Vegas blackjack, Double-Deck blackjack, Single-Deck blackjack, Anything-Goes blackjack, Blackjack Swap, Barcelona 21 blackjack, Super Play 21 blackjack. How Card Counting in Blackjack Helps

How Card Counting in Blackjack Helps
In blackjack, just like in many casino card games, many experts employ the technique called card counting. Card counting, from the name itself, means counting or keeping track of the cards being dealt by the blackjack dealer. In blackjack, since letting other players to see your card is not illegal and will not make any difference, it may be easier to do card counting than in other casino card games. When the blackjack player knows which cards are still not dealt or are still in the deck, he can plot a strategy on how to use his options. An example is a player may choose to bet a higher amount when he knows that there is a large probability of getting a blackjack. The blackjack player may know this possibility when he has noted that there are still many aces and cards with a value of ten in the deck. Another example is when the blackjack player knows that there are more high valued cards in the deck, he may choose to double knowing that he may get a stronger hand. It is not necessary for a blackjack player to remember each card that is being dealt. Some experts have developed different card counting systems that assigns points to the card to make it easier for the player to track the cards. When card counting is done, the blackjack player may increase his advantage over the house by up to two percent. This would mean that the player increases his possibility of winning. When the player also employs card counting, he may determine when he is most likely to win, thus, increasing his blackjack bet or he bets on insurance. In many casinos in the United States, card counting in blackjack is not considered as cheating or illegal. However, there are also casinos that may ban blackjack players due to card counting. Which is why, when a blackjack player employs card counting, it is important that nobody notices that he is doing this. It is also considered illegal to use any type of counting instruments, be it a sheet of paper or an electronic instrument. With a bit of practice, card counting may come easy. When you’re not in a casino, you may practice playing blackjack at home or using a computer program and use your card counting strategies. With many blackjack players increasing their advantage through card counting, casinos now use several decks in their blackjack games to counteract card counting.

Basics of Blackjack

Basics of Blackjack
In a game of Blackjack, there are usually five to seven players on the blackjack table. A blackjack dealer is also present to distribute the cards and play against the other players. The blackjack table is where the games are played. It can be kidney shaped but in most casinos, blackjack tables are semi-circle. Each blackjack player is seated on different circles along the blackjack table. When the blackjack player sits on the table, chips must be bought from the blackjack dealer before the game can proceed. The blackjack player can only place his wager on his space on his semi-circle. Only bets inside the betting circle are counted. To win, the player must be close to a total of 21 (add the values of the cards) and have a value of the cards higher than that of the dealer. Face cards are worth ten points and the others follow their numerical values. Aces are worth either one or eleven, at the decision of the player. To have a “blackjack”, the player must have a total of 21 in the first two cards dealt. A bonus is usually given in circumstances when a player receives a Blackjack and the player gets paid immediately. But if the dealer also has a Blackjack, no one gets paid. If you are confident about your cards, a mid-game increasing of bets is allowed in Blackjack. This is called a double down. A double down happens when you bet the same amount that you did in the first bet. Most casinos allow this provided you agree to receive one more card. Telling the dealer you want to double down is achieved by sliding a second bet beside your original bet. Never rest your second bet on top of the original one as this insinuates cheating by increasing your original bet illegally. The Blackjack dealer will give you an additional card. Wait until all cards are laid before you open your last card. If you win, you will be paid for the two bets. Splitting is another way of increasing your bet mid-game in Blackjack, but unlike in double down, you only get paid for a single bet. Splitting only happens if the player is dealt with pair cards like nine diamond and nine clubs. In this case, you can then split your cards to give you 2 separate cards to play and another bet alongside the second card. The original bet goes with the first card and the second bet goes to the second card. In Blackjack, a pair is split by pointing at them (if dealt face up) and saying “split”. If dealt face down, turn them up and put them apart on the table. After splitting, the dealer will give cards to your first card and wait for you to decide to stand. The dealer will not deal cards for your second hand until you decide to stand on the first card. Whichever sets of card is closest to 21 wins the pot. Splitting rules vary in one casino to another so better ask your dealer of the casino policy if you’re unsure.
